Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, Waymo, has surpassed a historic milestone in driverless transportation technology, reaching 20 million fully autonomous trips worldwide. The company officially announced this new record via a statement on its social media platform, X.
Waymo Crosses a Significant Milestone
The data shared by Waymo proves that commercial robotaxi operations have gained unexpected momentum in recent months. The growth rate, particularly since the beginning of 2025, shows that autonomous vehicles are now transforming from an experimental stage into a widespread public transportation alternative.
The company’s growth statistics reveal a dramatic increase in operational capacity. Waymo announced reaching its 10 millionth cumulative trip last May.
While the previous increase from 5 million to 10 million took 5 months, the latest 10 million increase occurred in just 7 months, confirming the enormous scale of the passenger numbers transported.
As of today, Waymo vehicles make an average of 450,000 paid trips per week across the US alone. These operations continue uninterrupted from five main hubs: Austin, San Francisco, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
Waymo has also launched an aggressive global expansion plan for 2026. The company aims to enter more than 20 new cities in the US, including Dallas, Denver, Miami, and Las Vegas. London is also on the 2026 calendar as Waymo’s first overseas service point, while test drives continue in metropolises such as Tokyo and New York.
